Meet the Team
Mike Leonard is a film, TV and commercial director, WGA writer and executive producer. His lifelong obsession with mastering the craft of filmmaking led him to more Emmy nominations than sports trophies, and a mildly unhealthy fixation with color and light.
With a diverse portfolio that spans both narrative and nonfiction storytelling for some of the biggest brands, networks and streaming platforms in the world, he prides himself on
Advertising
In advertising, Mike has written and directed branded films and commercials for some of the biggest brands on the planet and worked with some of the most recognizable celebrities of our time. He also served as creative director for many of these campaigns. Despite his success, he wasn’t invited back to career day at his high school after he told everyone he dropped out of college to work in film.

Before
Before he ever thought he could make a living as a director, Mike built a career as a cinematographer. This background makes him very hands on with things like lens choices and lighting. It also makes him a royal pain in the ass to his DP, to whom he apologizes profusely, promising next time will be different.
A Unique Niche
For many years, Mike had a niche specialty filming in underdeveloped and remote parts of the world. These, often very meaningful projects, told stories that affected change by shining light on important causes and nonprofit work. Mike’s knowledge and comfort navigating foreign cultures and customs took him all over Central and South America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia telling stories that would leave him forever changed.
Master of None
Throughout his 20+ year career in filmmaking, he’s worked professionally and proficiently as a producer, editor, colorist and VFX artist, but often doesn’t mention these things as he fears it’ll paint him as a jack of all trades, master of none. However, these are all important beats and nuances to the story of who he is today and why he writes about himself in the third person to try and impress you enough to trust him with your next production.
Off-Set
While his film career transcends his wildest dreams, his greatest joy comes from doing life with his best friend / wife / producing-partner, Allie, as they raise their two kids, Jack and Charlotte with the help of their dog, Dr. Oliver.
Allie and Mike enjoy sharing their love of outdoor adventure sports, terribly good rom-coms, and jointly running their production company, Over the Edge. Allie often produces many of the projects that Mike directs and, shockingly, they’re still madly in love despite no clear boundaries or personal space.
Adventure Sports
Adventure sports have been part of Mike’s life since he was very young. As a morbidly obese child, Mike fell in love with climbing, but was far too affected by gravity to be good at it. At 15, he lost 60lbs and went on to make climbing and whitewater kayaking his obsessions. While he’s no Jimmy Chin, he’s found a few special projects that let him combine his love of filmmaking and outdoor sports.
Unpaid Career
Before he ever believed he could actually make a living as a filmmaker, Mike wanted to be a firefighter. So, that’s what he did. While the FDNY was his original career path, he also joined one of New Jersey’s busiest all-volunteer fire departments as a teenager, where he still serves, currently, as Captain of the rescue company. Mike directly credits his leadership skills and calm demeanor on-set to his 20+ years in the fire service. While every production comes with unique “fires” to put out and high-stress curveballs, it doesn’t come close to the life and death stakes that first responders navigate, and he’s grateful to have that perspective.
Throughout his career as a firefighter, Mike has been part of some extraordinary high-risk, high-reward events, earning him the Medal of Valor, the Meritorious Service Medal and several unit citations for life-saving actions. To this day, he maintains that if he ever wins an Oscar, he’ll still be prouder of the things he got to do as a firefighter.
